We're hiring

Kia ora! We are currently recruiting for two Wellington-based roles. Please find the job descriptions for a project manager or front-end developer below. We look forward to hearing from you.

Project manager

This is your chance to join a well-established digital design agency and manage design and digital projects from conception and design to development and implementation. This role is based in Wellington.

The role will see you leading and collaborating with creative, strategy and engineering teams to produce amazing digital design. You’ll facilitate teams to create the stunning work Chrometoaster is known for. You’ll happily take responsibility, seek consensus and make decisions so you can find solutions quickly and with confidence.

The person we’re looking for will be energetic and driven and have experience in creating large and small scale user-centred digital experiences, and a track record of successfully working in collaborative teams.

We are a high performing team and this role is core to our success. We are looking for someone who is committed to being a deeply involved ‘owner’ of projects, someone who our clients like, trust, respect, and who is invested in our client’s success. There is an amount of Account Management within the role where you will develop strong and trust-based relationships through your proven delivery experience, knowledge, and great communication skills.

This role will include maintaining the quality of many of the websites we have already built and managing and delivering on our service level agreements.

As a core part of the team you’ll:

  • Orchestrate people, processes and deliverables, across a number of cross-discipline projects — all the while focusing on quality

  • Manage client expectations, schedules, budgets, assets and scope

  • Work closely with clients to really understand their business and users

  • Be hands-on — conceptualising and collaborating with the entire design team

  • Work with our designers to size projects

  • Get to see you and your team's work making a difference out there in the world

We’re looking for:

  • A problem solver with proven ability to lead design and digital projects from concept to completion

  • A holistic thinker who can balance business and user requirements

  • Experience in user-centred design methodologies

  • A person with great interpersonal skills, who is able to communicate with clarity and, at times, under pressure

  • Someone who enjoys debate, and is also a fantastic listener

  • A highly-motivated and proactive attitude

  • Years of industry experience

  • Experience with Agile, or in an iterative environment would be beneficial — note though, we don’t run pure Agile; we have our own approach that blends Agile with Design Thinking/Co-design practices

  • A thorough understanding of website and application design, development and deployment

  • Experience with open source web technologies, such as SilverStripe

  • Delivering work on the Government’s CWP platform

  • Experience with design and UX projects

We offer:

  • Flexible and family-friendly working hours and conditions

  • Projects that make a difference in people’s lives

  • A talented team to learn from and contribute to

  • A working environment that is relaxed, friendly and fun

  • A competitive salary package

Front-end developer

HTML/CSS focus

Are you an experienced and versatile developer looking for a successful, inclusive place to work? This is your chance to join a multi-award winning, well-established digital design agency and work on innovative, large-scale, customer-centric and public good projects. This role is based in Wellington.

Day-to-day you will write clean, well-structured HTML, modular CSS and JavaScript to build excellent online experiences. Your work should be sympathetic to the needs of different kinds of users, including those with impairments. You should also have a healthy appreciation for design, an eye for detail and a focus on quality.

You will be comfortable working with our clients, project managers and our team of experienced specialists — UX and UI designers, information architects and back-end developers.

As part of the engineering team, you’ll collaborate effectively to understand UI requirements and recommend and implement solutions that follow best practices. You’ll be happy to work with our existing processes and structures and also contribute to their continuous improvement.

We’re looking for someone who can show finesse in:

HTML

  • HTML5 standards, semantics, hierarchy and document structure

  • Accessibility best practice and testing strategies

  • Templating with JS frameworks and/or back-end templating languages

  • Browser optimisation and legacy support

CSS

  • Responsive strategies

  • Preprocessors such as SCSS/SASS

  • BEM

  • Structural patterns such as ITCSS and SMACSS

  • Using CSS in JS frameworks

JavaScript

  • Writing data-driven JS solutions using frameworks such as Vue.js or React

  • Presentation and interaction-oriented JavaScript

Other

  • Experience with cross-device and cross-browser testing

  • Performance budgeting and speed-related best practices

  • Using git effectively

  • Configuring build tools, specifically Webpack or Gulp

In addition to the above you should:

  • Love a well-formatted commit message

  • Make use of code linting

  • Be able to maintain existing solutions we have built for our clients

  • Have a well-honed sense of usability and understanding of interaction design principles

  • Show the ability to communicate with clarity; be someone who enjoys debate, and is also a fantastic listener

  • Have 3+ years of industry experience (preferably in an agency)

  • Have examples of your work to help illustrate your skillset

As a bonus, you would have experience with:

  • Working with data from various APIs – REST, GraphQL etc.

  • SEO practices, search and social optimisation metadata

  • HTML newsletter templating

We are NOT looking for developers who:

  • Work exclusively in JavaScript

  • Rely solely on CSS frameworks (Bootstrap, Bulma etc.) for presentation

  • Use mainly jQuery-based plugins for their needs

  • Consider themselves full-stack programmers, though mostly work with back-end technologies

We offer you:

  • An inclusive, friendly, ego-free, creative environment

  • Plenty of other problem solvers to debate solutions with, in a supportive and constructive manner

  • Flexible and family-friendly working hours and conditions

  • Projects that make a difference in people’s lives

  • A talented team to learn from and contribute to

  • Development and training opportunities

  • A competitive salary package

  • Great coffee and chilled NZ wine and/or a beer or two to ease-in the weekend
